Scenic Houston Recognizes Westway
Scenic Houston recently honored Westway Park with its Scenic Star award, which recognizes an individual, organization or project for its positive contribution to Houston’s aesthetic environment. “Westway Park is an excellent example of combining office, hospitality and residential in a natural, ‘green’ environment,” said Anne Culver, executive director of Scenic Houston.
To achieve this balance, Westway Park was an endeavor of strategic planning, innovation and green development. When Wolff Companies purchased the 150 acres, located at the intersection of the Sam Houston Tollway and Clay Road in 1972, David Wolff had a clear vision for the property. Today, Westway Park and nature seamlessly coexist and serve as home to more than 10 corporate or regional headquarters, 6,000 employees, hotels, restaurants and apartments, and more LEED-certified or registered buildings than any other office park in Houston. Thousands of trees, extensive landscaping and protective covenants and guidelines regarding signage, parking and building materials have resulted in a beautiful, sustainable mixed-use complex and help ensure the long-term preservation of the property.
Nestled within Westway Park is Carolyn Wolff Park, a three-acre urban arboretum. A number of noteworthy, venerable trees grow in Carolyn Wolff Park, one of which is by far the largest overcup oak specimen catalogued in Harris County with a 116” trunk. To protect the more than 83 native Texas hardwood trees, Wolff Companies donated a permanent conservation easement to Trees for Houston. The grove includes at least four trophy trees and serves as an urban bird sanctuary with over 13 different varieties of birds including the Loggerhead and over six different varieties of butterflies and moths. And, Westway Park is extremely proud of the fact that a Great Horned Owl lives in the park and even built a nest and hatched its young there last year.
