Demand for rural land drives surge in sales at Houston-area communities

Tired of being cooped up at home as a result of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, many people are looking for wide open spaces where they can stretch their legs while keeping distance between themselves and others. That impulse has led to a surge in demand for rural properties that are much larger than anything buyers might find within city limits.

Houston-based Wolff Cos. has seen the level of interest in rural properties firsthand at the real estate company’s Gates Ranch community.

Located about 75 miles northwest of downtown Houston, Gates Ranch is a 1,500-acre community of family farms in Washington County. In the past three months, the company has sold the last two community estates in the project’s second phase as well as three estates in the third and final phase.

In total, 19 estates ranging in size from about 20 acres to larger than 100 acres have sold in Gates Ranch since its opening, and another two properties are under contract. Just six properties remain, Wolff Cos. said.
