Waller ISD purchases land for elementary school in Bridgeland’s Prairieland Village in Cypress
By Florian Martin, Houston Business Journal
The Waller Independent School District has purchased 19 acres for its second school within Bridgeland, The Howard Hughes Corp.’s master-planned community in the Cypress area.
The land sale closed on Dec. 6. There is no timeline yet for the construction of the school, which will be at the future intersection of Conservation Crossing and Hilltopping Drive on the northern tip of what will be Prairieland Village west of the Grand Parkway.
“Waller ISD’s decision to purchase a second school site west of Grand Parkway in the early stages of development for Prairieland Village speaks to the growth of the community and the desire for personal, community-oriented educational opportunities,” Steve Sams, Howard Hughes’ senior vice president for master-planned communities in Houston, said in a statement.
Prairieland, which celebrated its grand opening this past spring, is Bridgeland’s third village. Thus far, builders have sold 304 homes in Prairieland, according to Howard Hughes (NYSE: HHC).
Presales are also underway in Creekland, the master-planned community’s fourth village, which will be home to Bridgeland’s first charter school. Houston-based Harmony Public Schools plans to open the school for elementary students starting with the 2025-26 school year and for middle and high school students in 2027-28.
The new Waller ISD school in Prairieland will be the fifth public elementary school in Bridgeland and the master-planned community’s ninth school overall.
Currently, the community has four schools in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District: Pope Elementary in Lakeland Village as well as the new McGown Elementary, Wells Elementary and Bridgeland High School in Parkland Village. A new Cy-Fair ISD middle school is under construction and slated to open next year.
Waller ISD plans to break ground on its first Bridgeland elementary school, also in Prairieland, in the spring and open in August 2024.
The private K-12 Cypress Christian School, which plans to move to Bridgeland from its current campus by 2025, will also be in Prairieland.
The southwestern corner of Prairieland is inside the Katy Independent School District boundaries, but no schools have been announced for that area yet.
Overall, Bridgeland has about 5,800 students who attend public schools in and around the 11,500-acre master-planned community, according to Howard Hughes.
“The Waller ISD family and Bridgeland community are growing at a rapid pace,” Waller ISD Superintendent Kevin Moran said in a statement. “We are proud to partner together to plan for the future and work to prepare every student to achieve their highest aspirations.”
The cost of the land transaction for the new school was not disclosed but it was funded with bonds from a November 2019 Waller ISD bond election, according to Waller ISD Communications Director Sarah Marcus.
Voters approved the issuing of more bonds for additional school sites in another referendum during the general election on Nov. 8.
