Kelsey-Seybold to grow Katy footprint through new West Campus, clinic expansions
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic is adding to its presence in the Katy area by constructing a new 125,000-square-foot medical facility near one of its existing clinics to create the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic — West Campus, adding more services to the west Houston area. The health system broke ground on the project this month, according to an announcement.
The new campus will be located at 2522 West Grand Parkway, adjacent to Kelsey-Seybold’s existing West Grand Parkway clinic, which will also undergo expansions. Kelsey-Seybold said in its announcement that the new campus is expected to be completed by fall 2024.
Kelsey-Seybold officials confirmed to the Houston Business Journal that two Houston-based firms, Kirksey Architecture and Gamma Construction, were tapped for the project. The health system also said that the expansion would take Kelsey-Seybold’s footprint in the area from 33,000 square feet to 195,000 square feet when complete, not including any other locations besides the West Grand Parkway clinic.
Services coming to the new campus include a new radiology suite and a planned ambulatory surgery center at an unspecified date in the future. Other new services include neurology, plastic surgery, behavioral medicine, and rheumatology. The campus will also expand space for more Kelsey-Seybold practitioners in family medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, cardiology, and optometry among others.
“We are delighted to be growing with the vibrant Katy community and expanding our campus to meet the health care needs of residents living and working here,” said Tony Lin, M.D., chairman and CEO, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.
The new campus follows previously announced plans from Kelsey-Seybold to open campuses in the Clear Lake area and the Sugar Land area last year. A Kelsey-Seybold spokesperson said those campuses are targeted to open in 2024, continuing the health system’s plans of expanding clinics and campuses across the Houston area.
Kelsey-Seybold also recently confirmed it had opened a clinic at City Place, the master-planned development previously known as Springwoods Village. Some of Houston’s largest public companies, such as Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE: HPE), are headquartered in the development.
Other Kelsey-Seybold openings include new clinics at Tanglewood, Stafford, South Shore Harbor, Fairfield, Westchase, West University and Rice Village.
During an April panel hosted by the Greater Houston Partnership, Kelsey-Seybold CEO Tony Lin discussed the difficulty Houstonians can face accessing health care and spoke about the potential expansion of virtual health care.
“Technology, as well as the comfort in using virtual care, has now become part of an access equation,” Lin said.
Population growth in Houston’s suburbs have led other local health systems to open or plan buildings outside of the 610 Loop. Growth in the northwest Houston area was a driving factor for HCA Houston Healthcare, which is expanding its surgical suite at its Northwest location along with upgrades for women’s services and a new parking lot. HCA Houston Northwest CEO Scott Davis described population growth in the area as “exponential.”
Houston Methodist also has its eyes on the area as it prepares for the opening of its new Cypress campus in 2025, which is billed as a “campus for the future.” The new hospital will have an emphasis on medical innovation drawn from Houston Methodist’s existing tech hubs, including its newest opening in the Ion.
Meanwhile, other major hospital expansions in other parts of the Houston area include Texas Children’s Hospital spending $245 million on a new tower for its Women’s Pavilion.
Hospital system expansions in Houston are counterbalanced by a slowing independent medical office market. An August report from JLL analyzing the second-quarter 2023 Houston medical office market anticipated a slowdown in non-system development due to potential struggles in securing financing.
