Healthcare Leaders Discuss Market Drivers at BisNow’s National Healthcare South Event

Top healthcare and real estate executives recently exchanged observations and opinions about the Houston area market at BisNow’s National Healthcare South, an event which drew more than 400 attendees. With a deep background in both real estate and healthcare, Carolyn Wolff Dorros, Executive Vice President of Wolff Companies, was selected as a panelist for the discussion, “Community Wellness: Optimizing Care in Urban & Suburban Environments.”

A discussion of urban and suburban healthcare growth trends, moderated by Stephanie Barnes of LAZ Healthcare Services (far left) included panelists (left to right) Ashley Strickland, NewQuest Properties; Justin Braswell, Transwestern; Jill Pearsall, Texas Children’s Hospital; Preston Hodges, McCarthy Building Companies; Jason Signor, Caddis, and Carolyn Wolff Dorros, Wolff Companies.

The panel discussed a variety of innovative approaches and financial implications that play into decision making, but all agreed that every facility decision is ultimately tied to meeting the needs of the community and providing improved ease of access and convenience.

Jill Pearsal with Texas Children’s Hospital, the highest ranked children’s hospital in the South by US News and World Report, said their growth strategy starts with determining “the right care at the right place” and how to meet the needs of people in growing communities.

Rapid population growth in West Houston has prompted a massive investment in quality healthcare facilities which continues today, noted Carolyn Wolff Dorros of Wolff Companies. She highlighted the establishment of the Texas Medical Center-West Campus and construction of Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus and Houston Methodist West Hospital. She also pointed out that both hospitals have undergone several rounds of expansions since both opened in 2010, reflecting the area’s continued growth and demand for conveniently located, accessible healthcare services. The new MD Anderson facility slated to open later this year in Wolff Companies’ Central Park even underwent expansion before it opened – hospital leadership upsized plans for the facility from 175,000 feet to 260,000 feet before breaking ground.

Panelists agreed that metro Houston’s growth and demand for convenience continues to fuel development of top-quality suburban hospitals, emergency rooms and urgent care centers in suburban communities.
