Texas Children’s Hospital Constructing Nation’s First Pediatric Isolation Unit

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, adjacent to Wolff Companies’ Ten Oaks, is building the nation’s first pediatric isolation unit. Similar to the four adult biocontainment units in the United States, the unit at Texas Children’s will be the only facility of its kind in the country dedicated to children with highly contagious infectious diseases. Texas Children’s is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to design, build and equip the eight-bed unit, which will cost approximately $16 million and is expected to be operational by fall of this year. In its entirety, the unit will add 18 acute care beds to the West Campus, bringing total hospital capacity to 62 beds. When in isolation mode, 8 of the 18 beds will compose the isolation unit.

The development of the isolation unit demonstrates again how Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus is delivering the same level of care – and beyond – as it does at its main campus in the Texas Medical Center. Other advancements in the level of care at the West Campus include the addition of a pediatric intensive care unit and sports medicine and plastic surgery sub-specialties. These services are a tremendous amenity to the people who live and work in West Houston.

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, located at Interstate 10 and Barker Cypress Road, opened in 2011 as part of the Texas Medical Center – West Campus that includes Methodist West Houston Hospital. Both hospitals serve as anchor institutions for the medical complex, which is near Wolff Companies’ developments in The Energy Corridor, such as Ten Oaks, Park 10 and Central Park.

“We are very proud of the vision and leadership Texas Children’s Hospital’s team has demonstrated by taking on this important initiative and responsibility,” said David S. Wolff, Chairman and President of Wolff Companies. “Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus continues to make significant strides for not only the expansive growth in West Houston but also for the community at large.”

Other new developments in Ten Oaks includes two hotels, a Hampton Inn and Suites and a Courtyard by Marriott by Dallas based Western International. Additionally, Hunington Residential will commence construction on its 382 unit high density residential community immediatley north of Texas Children’s campus later this month. Only two sites remain available in Ten Oaks: 3.3 acres at the northwest corner of Park Row and Barker Cypress Road, and 6.6 acres on Park Row.

At Wolff Companies, we were honored to play a role in the development of West Houston, including the establishment of world-class healthcare provided at Texas Medical Center – West Campus. Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus was a vital part of that plan and today, only four years after opening, we congratulate them for this outstanding accomplishment.
